The RFEF dismisses Montse Tomé as women's national team coach and appoints Sonia Bermúdez.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has decided to dispense with Montse Tomé as women's national team coach and has replaced her with Sonia Bermúdez , the coach of the U-19 team, and Iraia Iturregi will be her deputy .

The organization, chaired by Rafael Louzán, made this decision at the RFEF Board of Directors meeting this morning. However, the contract of the women's national team coach, whose contract has been decided not to be renewed, does not expire until August 31, so her replacement will not be able to sign until September.

Tomé had recently reached the final of the Women's European Championship in Switzerland, but lost on penalties to England. It had been the highest-ever finish for Spanish women's football in a continental tournament.

The former national team coach had been the first woman to hold the position after Jorge Vilda 's dismissal due to the Rubiales affair . Tomé had managed to win the World Cup with the national team's victory in Australia as the Madrid coach's assistant.

With Tomé at the helm, the women's team won the UEFA Nations League and finished fourth at the Paris Olympic Games despite being one of the favorites to win a medal.

A new direction

Bermúdez will take the reins of one of the best national teams in the world after leading the U-19 team to European champion status for two consecutive years (2023 and 2024) and coaching the U-15 and U-23 teams, as well as one of Real Madrid's cadets.

The former Vallecas player joins the national team after being one of the people who signed a statement along with part of the coaching staff, including Montse, condemning Luis Rubiales 's attitude toward Jenni Hermoso . However, in the famous assembly in which Rubiales shouted "I'm not going to resign," she was one of those who applauded, sitting right next to Tomé.

Another important decision taken at the Board of Directors meeting regarding women's football, which has seen its budget cut by half a million euros, is the abolition of the U-23 team.
