The federation has not renewed Montse Tomé's contract as coach of the women's national soccer team.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has just officially announced the appointment of Sonia Bermúdez as coach of the Spanish women's national football team, replacing Montse Tomé.
The decision was made at the RFEF board meeting held this Monday. The departure of Montse Tomé as national team coach, which required the consensus of all the federation's directors, and the subsequent appointment of Sonia Bermúdez as the new head coach were the first items on the meeting's agenda.
The news had been brewing since before the European Championship . But it only just came to light. As reported by EL PAÍS, the decision to let go of Montse Tomé was made before the European Championship: whatever happened in Switzerland, the Asturian would leave the national team on August 31, when her contract expired.
Regarding the choice of Sonia Bermúdez as her replacement, something similar happened. Reyes Bellver, the head of women's football at the RFEF, had that name in mind from the beginning. Although others, such as José Luis Sánchez Vera (the former Real Sociedad coach), were mentioned, the position always seemed to have a clear target.
In this way, the RFEF is once again opting for a homegrown player, prioritizing continuity over dissolution. As was the case with Jorge Vilda and Montse Tomé, Sonia Bermúdez has little experience in club football, beyond coaching Real Madrid's U-18 women's team in 2021. She has spent the rest of her coaching career in the lower categories of the national team. Her most recent stint is on the bench with the Spanish U-23 team, which is now defunct. Bermúdez will be joined by Iraia Iturregi as assistant coach, David Aznar as head coach of the U-18 and U-19 teams, and Milagros Martínez as head coach of the U-17 team.
