President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo yesterday expressed her pride in welcoming the historic Mexican diving team to the National Palace, who won medals at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore. She congratulated them and assured them of her continued support.

During the reception, held at noon, the president mingled with the athletes and coaches who represented Mexico, including Osmar Olvera, gold medalist in the three-meter springboard.

The team arrived at the venue accompanied by Rommel Pacheco, director of the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sports, as well as coach Ma Jin and Fernando Platas, president of the Mexican Diving Federation.

After the meeting, Sheinbaum Pardo published a video on X with the divers, who were carrying the medals they won while touring the National Palace.

I am very proud to welcome this historic team of aquatics athletes and coaches, who have won medals for our country. I congratulate them, and they will always have our support , the President wrote.

Osmar Olvera epitomizes a turning point in international diving. At the World Swimming Championships in Singapore, the Mexican broke Chinese dominance in the three-meter springboard event and proved that Asians are not invincible diving machines.

Take care of yourselves, because I will be your stone in the road, I want you to dream of me every day and not be able to sleep , Olvera warned on his return to Mexico City.

Beating the Asians is no small feat, especially considering that they won all the available gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics alone.

"I'm not going to give up ground; on the contrary, my goal is to improve to take their titles in other events. Beating them was a very nice feeling, similar to my first Olympic medal. I know I can do better, so the Chinese will have to be careful ," added the national team member, who collected four medals in Singapore: one gold and three silver.

As soon as he set foot on Mexican soil, Olvera was greeted with the strains of El Rey and Cielito Lindo . Flanked by the two most important women in his life: his coach Ma Jin and his mother, the Mexico City native shed his national hero status, despite being our country's most decorated diver in world championships with eight medals.

It's very easy to be on top, but it's also easy to fall, and I always keep that in mind. I don't want to label myself, because that's up to the individual. I believe there's no reason to feel better than anyone else.

With Olvera as its leader, the art of taking off, spinning, and landing headfirst in the water became Mexico's most successful sport. A result achieved thanks to the unity of the national teams.

There were eight medals in total, and it wasn't just me; all my teammates did their part to make this performance in Singapore the best ever. Since Rommel passed the baton to me at the Tokyo Olympics, I've become a leader, and I love it when the younger ones come up to me and ask for advice , said the two-time Olympic medalist, who was named the World Aquatics Men's Diver of the Year.

Having accomplished his mission of making history in the season's most important competition, Osmar will take a few days off before returning to the pool.

The Chinese aren't going to sit back and do nothing. We have to rest, enjoy this, and get back to training as usual.

Ask for a pay raise for Ma Jin

Olvera has one more thing on his wish list: Olympic gold. To achieve it, he needs better working conditions for his coach, Ma Jin.

If I had the opportunity to speak with the President, I would ask for a raise for Ma Jin. She's received many offers from other countries, and I want her to stay. She's the key to Mexico's three World Cup gold medals: mine and Paola Espinosa's. She's the best coach in the world, and her work is worth it.

The diver considers the instructor to be his second mother, so her continued presence is crucial on the road to Los Angeles 2028.

She's still here because of an agreement we have based on affection. They haven't agreed on a price; it would have to be a very good offer for her to want to leave. I'm a little worried, but I hope that issue can be resolved. She's a foreigner; pay her what she deserves.

Moved to tears, Ma Jin hinted that leaving Mexico is a very remote possibility.

I'm very demanding because I don't just want to develop good athletes, but good people. I'm very grateful to everyone in this country, especially my husband; without him, life would be very difficult for me. I'm staying in Mexico because I've known Osmar since I was little and because I'm older now and have to think about my health too.

For Mayanin Ibarra, Olvera's mother, it was very difficult for her eight-year-old son to leave home to become a legend.

It was hard to let go, but it was worth it. Sometimes, no matter how crazy our children's dreams are, we have to support them and follow their crazy plans. They grow up, mature, move on, and it's great that they leave the nest successful and doing what they love , she commented.

Washington. President Donald Trump signed an executive order yesterday at the White House establishing a task force to oversee the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. According to the president, this decision will mobilize the entire federal government to ensure the games are safe, smooth, and a historic success .

The order requires the task force to coordinate security and planning for the summer games, and expedite visa processing and accreditation for athletes, coaches, media, and other visitors arriving in the United States.

The team—led by the president himself—includes Vice President JD Vance, Attorney General Pam Bondi, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr, and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.

At the event, Trump praised Gene Sykes, chairman of the board of directors of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), for his decision a few weeks ago to ban transgender women from competing in women's sports.

"The United States will not allow men to steal trophies from women at the 2028 Olympic Games," said the US president, who wondered why he didn't hear applause in the room when he praised Sykes for doing so.
