More than a hundred Optimist, ILCA 4 and ILCA 6 teams compete in Melilla

The Royal Maritime Club of Melilla (RCMM) hosted the press conference this Wednesday to present the 5th "Royal Maritime Club of Melilla – Melilla City of Sport 2025" Trophy, one of the most important nautical events on the summer calendar in the autonomous city. The event featured speeches by the President of the RCMM, Jerónimo Pérez; the Minister of Sports, Miguel Ángel Fernández; and the Race Committee official, Fidel Martínez, who detailed all the organizational and sporting aspects of the event.
The competition, now in its fifth edition, will be held over two consecutive weekends, bringing together a distinguished representation of national and international grassroots sailing. The Optimist, ILCA 4, and ILCA 6 classes will compete from August 1 to 3, while the Snipe fleet will compete on August 8, 9, and 10, with a special focus on local sailors.
In the words of Jerónimo Pérez, "This Trophy is already a benchmark in the summer calendar, and on its fifth anniversary, it marks a record participation." This year, more than 100 young sailors from four autonomous communities and Portugal, representing a total of 15 nautical clubs, will meet in Melilla.
The program will begin this Friday, weather permitting, with a coastal regatta that will serve as the 2nd José Manuel Calzado Puertas Memorial, in memory of the beloved and remembered president of the RCMM. On Saturday and Sunday, more technical and demanding trapeze-style events will be held, testing the skill of participants either on the regatta course located opposite Horcas Coloradas beach or on the course located within Melilla Bay.
In this edition, 94 sailors will participate in the Optimist class, 31 in ILCA 4, and 20 boats in ILCA 6, confirming the growing presence and prestige of the Trophy.
For his part, Councilor Miguel Ángel Fernández emphasized the Autonomous City's firm commitment to grassroots water sports, supporting these types of events that promote Melilla as a sporting destination and foster values of hard work, camaraderie, and respect for the sea among young people.
The organizers emphasized the significant logistical and human effort required to coordinate an event of this magnitude, and expressed their gratitude for the collaboration of the RCMM staff, technicians, participating clubs, and sponsors, including the participation of the shipping company Baleària, responsible for transporting the entire peninsular fleet to Melilla.
The 5th "Real Club Marítimo Melilla – Melilla City of Sport 2025" Trophy promises to be a major sporting spectacle in Melilla waters, once again reaffirming the joint commitment of the RCMM and the Ministry of Sports to the promotion and development of grassroots sailing.
