How long could Carrasquilla be sidelined after Kevin Mier's injury?

Cruz Azul's worst fears were confirmed: Colombian goalkeeper Kevin Mier will not be able to play in the 2025 Apertura playoffs or the Interamerican Cup to be held in Qatar , after suffering a fractured tibia caused by a hard tackle from Pumas player Adalberto Carrasquilla .

After the goalkeeper underwent an MRI, the results revealed a serious injury. Although the exact recovery time is still unknown, it is understood that Mier will not return to the field for the remainder of the year.

In the next few hours, Cruz Azul will issue the official medical report and is also expected to announce the request to suspend the Panamanian midfielder from Pumas, in accordance with the regulations of the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) .

Cruz Azul will appeal the regulations

The FMF's disciplinary regulations allow clubs to request the suspension of an opposing player when unsportsmanlike conduct results in serious injury. In such cases, the Disciplinary Committee must review the play and determine whether a sanction is warranted, regardless of the referee's decision during the match.

If the sanction is imposed, the Panamanian player could be suspended for the same amount of time that Mier will be out of action, which would be between 3 and 6 months.

Referee Fernando Hernández only showed a yellow card to Carrasquilla for the action that injured Mier, which generated annoyance among the Cruz Azul players and coaching staff.

Gudiño takes the baton

With the starting goalkeeper unavailable, manager Nicolás Larcamón will rely on Andrés Gudiño to defend the Cruz Azul goal during the most crucial part of the tournament. The Mexican goalkeeper has played two matches in the Apertura 2025, the last one when Mier was relegated to the bench.
