Google Gemini AI Integrates into Samsung Galaxy Watches and Earbuds for Smarter Hands-Free Assistance

Samsung announced a major update to its wearables ecosystem on May 14: the integration of Google's advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) model, Gemini, into its popular Galaxy Watch smartwatches and upcoming Galaxy Buds3 earbuds.

This collaboration will materialize in the coming months and promises to bring hands-free assistance and AI capabilities to a new level of intelligence and cohesion in the South Korean brand's wearable devices. For Galaxy Watch users, the arrival of Gemini will mean the ability to access assistance through much more natural and contextual voice commands.

Productivity tasks can be performed on the fly, such as asking Gemini to remind you of specific information (e.g., “Remind me to use locker 43 at the gym today”) or to summarize your last important email while your hands are full.

AI will also be geared toward wellness features, offering quick responses and allowing users to return to their activities efficiently. This goes beyond the current simple voice commands, aiming for more fluid and useful conversational interactions.

As for the Galaxy Buds, the Gemini experience is expected to be even more integrated and frictionless. Users will be able to activate the AI assistant by voice or through touch controls (such as pinch and hold) on the earbuds themselves.

This will allow you to interact with your connected Galaxy smartphone without having to take it out of your pocket, for example, to check the weather forecast before going for a run or to control other phone functions.

This integration of an AI model as advanced as Gemini into wearable devices is a significant step toward making artificial intelligence more accessible and ubiquitous in people's daily lives. It seeks to improve the user experience and expand the functionality of these devices beyond their traditional fitness- and notification-focused roles.

The collaboration between Samsung (a leader in hardware) and Google (a leader in software and AI) is also a strategic response to the intense competition in the AI and wearables market, where other tech giants like Apple continue to innovate with their own assistants and ecosystems.

However, this increased integration of AI into highly personal devices also raises significant questions about data privacy—especially with the constant processing of voice commands and access to personal and health information—and about the processing power and energy efficiency of these small devices. The industry will need to address these challenges to ensure consumer trust and the long-term viability of these technologies.
