Vélez in the morning | 'Colombia has given me the best and the worst': María Carolina Hoyos, sister of assassinated Senator Miguel Uribe

María Carolina Hoyos , sister of assassinated senator and presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay, said that despite the current situation she and her family are going through, she has not thought about leaving Colombia and has faith that the country can move forward.
In an interview on the program Vélez por la mañana , hosted by journalist Luis Carlos Vélez, Hoyos stated that, despite the murders of his mother (journalist Diana Turbay Quintero in 1991) and his brother, who was attacked on June 7 and died on August 11, 2025, "the country in which one is born is like one's children."

"My family has always fought for this country and taught me to love it, and I never want to give it up. I feel like this is a very difficult time. Obviously, what happened to my mom devastated me, and what happened to my brother now does too, but in any case, there are more of us who are good in Colombia," Hoyos said.
Hoyos, who directs the Solidarity for Colombia Foundation, founded by his grandmother, Nydia Quintero, added that Colombia is a country worth fighting for. "I have everything here; I have my children, I have my life. Colombia has given me the best and the worst (...) I never want to think that my main option is to leave the country. I want to stay here, I want to work for it," he stated.

Speaking briefly on political issues, Hoyos stated that the person who should decide who should inherit Miguel Uribe Turbay's legacy is his father, Miguel Uribe Londoño. "The person in charge of directing, overseeing, and choosing who should inherit Miguel's legacy is his father; he is the one who is called to do that."
However, Hoyos stated that Colombia currently needs "unity, harmony, peace, to truly live in a country where we all fit in."
