The "prominent role" of plenipotentiary ambassador that the libertarians want to give Mauricio Macri after the agreement with the PRO

Following the tensions between the two parties that arose during the legislative election campaign in Buenos Aires, President Javier Milei stated this Wednesday that Mauricio Macri could occupy "a prominent role" as ambassador-at-large in his administration, following the agreement signed by La Libertad Avanza (LLA) and the PRO party to compete together in the Buenos Aires elections.

"I would love for President Macri to have such a prominent international role as a representative of Argentina," Milei said during an interview with El Observador radio.

When asked why he hadn't been offered the position yet, Milei replied: "The topic hasn't come up, but it seems to me that Macri would have a lot to contribute to a task like this ."

Economy Minister Luis Caputo, who echoed Milei's sentiments, also addressed this issue in another interview with Luis Majul, but on a different outlet.

"Mauricio in that role would be a luxury. He has knowledge and connections. He's someone who can promote Argentina around the world like no one else. He would be fantastic," Caputo remarked to La Nación+.

The relationship between Milei and Mauricio Macri is fraught with ups and downs. During the 2023 elections, the former president supported the Libertarian candidate in the runoff against Sergio Massa. In 2024, the PRO leader even endorsed him in Congress with his deputies, amid a minority of Libertarians.

But with the approach of the legislative elections in the City of Buenos Aires, everything changed. Days before that election, which was ultimately won by the libertarian Manuel Adorni, Macri harshly criticized Milei for failing to pass the Clean Record law in Congress, an initiative by Silvia Lospennato, a Buenos Aires candidate for the yellow party.

"This government has defrauded all Argentines of their hopes of moving toward a normal society, where corrupt officials cannot participate in politics. The law could never have been overthrown. This couldn't have happened so suddenly. The government is solely responsible," Macri declared at the time.

In turn, Milei targeted Macri and the PRO party during the campaign and fired heavy ammunition at the former president when the LLA won the Buenos Aires midterm elections.

"Perhaps Macri should understand that his time has passed," Milei stated, in a way retiring the former president from any political participation.

In this context, a possible agreement between LLA and PRO for the province of Buenos Aires was very difficult to materialize.

But as the days went by, Sebastián Pareja, LLA's owner in Buenos Aires province, continued meetings with Cristian Ritondo, Diego Santilli, and Guillermo Montenegro, and finally, on Wednesday, they announced the agreement to combat Kirchnerism.

The pact calmed the waters, and the libertarians are already considering a government position for Mauricio Macri to garner support and continue their goal of expanding nationally.
