Abinader supervises work at the Puerto Plata landfill.

As part of the presidential agenda that he has been carrying out since yesterday in the province of Puerto Plata , the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, made a supervisory visit this Sunday to the sanitation works at the San Felipe de Puerto Plata landfill, a project that is more than 85% complete.
The president received technical explanations about the private investment project, which will exceed 1 billion pesos . Upon leaving, Abinader emphasized that this intervention puts an end to one of the city's main environmental and public health problems .
"This was a serious problem when the smoke came into Puerto Plata , affecting health and tourism. That will be a thing of the past," the president briefly stated.
The Minister of the Presidency, José Ignacio Paliza, recalled that for years, fires at the landfill generated clouds of smoke that even forced cruise passengers to stay off their ships or cancel stops at the terminal.
"Today, we are witnessing a landmark effort, definitively eliminating this problem that shamed us as a society and as a tourist destination ," Paliza said.

Alfredo Acebal, project manager, reported that a sanitary landfill and a waste recovery (classification and utilization) plant are being built, with the capacity to handle 1,500 tons per day .
He explained that a recycling plant allows recyclable materials to be separated and repurposed, reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills and generating environmental and economic benefits .
Acebal emphasized that the investment already exceeds 700 million pesos , that the project will create around 1,500 direct and indirect jobs , and that it is being carried out under stricter environmental standards than those established by law.
The project is currently 85% complete and is expected to be completed between October and November of this year.
