Long weekends in Colombia 2025: August arrives with the commemoration of the Battle of Boyacá and an ideal weekend for travel.

July is coming to an end, and August is approaching. This month will have two holidays, Thursday, August 7th, and Monday, August 18th. Therefore, planning almost a month in advance can be helpful.
What is celebrated on August 7? The Battle of Boyacá, which took place on August 7, 1819, was a crucial victory for the independence fighters over the Spanish army. This result led to the consolidation of the rebellion of the soldiers led by the liberator Simón Bolívar against the Spanish army.

It's a holiday because it's considered a date worth commemorating and a crucial one in the creation of the Republic of Colombia. During this date, especially in Boyacá and Tunja, parades and commemorative events are held to remember our heroes.
This holiday will not be moved to the following Monday, August 11th, as it is a National Holiday. This day will fall on a Thursday, with no long weekend possible. Unless the company grants Friday, August 8th, as a day off for its employees, it will be considered a holiday.

August 18th will be the other holiday of the month, commemorating the Assumption of the Virgin. The liturgical day of celebration is August 15th, but thanks to the Emiliani law, this date has been moved to the following Monday.

This liturgical celebration honors the Catholic belief that the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ, was taken to heaven body and soul to be venerated for eternity. It is a tradition promulgated by Pope Pius XII in 1950.
Colombia, a predominantly Catholic country, celebrates this holiday with processions, Masses, and cultural events that venerate the Virgin Mary as an authority figure within the Catholic faith worldwide.
