What did Pepe Mujica die of?

A few moments ago, Yamndú Orsi , President of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay , announced the death of former Uruguayan President José "Pepe" Mujica . He did so through the following message shared on social media:

"It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our comrade Pepe Mujica . President, activist, leader, and leader. We will miss you dearly, dear old man. Thank you for everything you gave us and for your profound love for your people."

The former Uruguayan president passed away at the age of 89. He was one of the most beloved and respected figures in Latin America for his political positions and humanistic opinions.

On April 29 of last year, Mujica himself announced at a press conference that he had been diagnosed with a tumor in his esophagus. Shortly afterward, it was confirmed that this tumor was malignant , and radiation therapy was recommended, just as he had been treated in Montevideo.

After 31 radiotherapy sessions , the disease progressed and spread to his liver . Therefore, Mujica decided to discontinue further medical treatment , expressing his desire to pass away peacefully and without suffering. "I'm dying," he declared openly. His progressive decline in vitality prevented him from participating in the regional elections held last Sunday.

In the hours before his death, the delicate condition of his body became known. His wife, former Senator Lucía Topolansky, emphasized Mujica's fragile health and the priority of seeking his well-being and avoiding pain, as well as being with him until the very end. "I've been with him for more than 40 years, and I'll be there until the very end; that's what I promised," she said.

Pepe Mujica died on May 13, 2025 , one week before his 90th birthday.
