The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) called for people to take care of their heart health through seven essential actions that improve cardiovascular health, with a focus that ranges from preventing cardiovascular disease and detecting risk factors to treating complications and providing rehabilitation for patients who have already suffered a cardiovascular event such as a myocardial infarction.

Dr. Luis Antonio Moreno Ruíz, assigned to the High Specialty Medical Unit (UMAE) Cardiology Hospital of the National Medical Center (CMN) Siglo XXI, explained that The IMSS provides more than one million consultations a year, of which 75 percent are for heart disease. .

"In Family Medicine Units (FMUs), the main reason for consultation is systemic arterial hypertension; while in hospitals, the first places of discharge are for ischemic heart disease, including acute myocardial infarction," he explained.

The IMSS cardiologist explained that The most common heart diseases are ischemia, hypertension, heart valve disease, congenital heart disease, cardiomyopathies, infectious diseases and tumors, among others. .

He noted that at all three levels of care, there are health promotion and prevention programs such as the PrevenIMSS and CHKT strategies, which include seven essential actions to improve cardiovascular health.

He mentioned that efforts are aimed at Improve the population's diet by reducing salt consumption, avoiding saturated fats and refined sugars, performing aerobic exercise regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, restricting tobacco and alcohol consumption, and regularly checking cholesterol, glucose, and blood pressure levels. .

Dr. Moreno Ruíz announced that IMSS specialists are working on a more ambitious strategy focused on preventing cardiorenal-metabolic syndrome, due to the heart's close relationship with other organs.

"We must remember that the heart is not alone in the body; it is closely interconnected with other organs , in this case the kidneys, the brain, and adipose tissue. When the latter malfunctions, it constitutes one of the main causes of cardiovascular damage," he indicated.

Dr. Luis Antonio Moreno Ruíz reported that in addition to having two single-theme units, CMN La Raza and Siglo XXI, dedicated exclusively to treating heart disease, the IMSS has a network consisting of 25 UMAE (Medical Centers for the Prevention and Promotion of Heart Disease), nearly 253 Second Level Hospitals, and 1,543 UMF (Medical Units for the Prevention and Promotion of Health), as well as advanced care for these conditions.
