Without a doubt, Mexicans have a very close history with Nissan: the Tsuru was the favorite model , not only in Mexico, but in the United States as well; initially due to its functionality, but after a tough national economic situation, the Tsuru was the best and cheapest vehicle available on the market.

However, before the beloved Tsuru, there were other Nissan models in Mexico that grew up alongside several generations of young people and adults, and which are cherished with great affection. Do you have any memories of a classic Nissan?

Also known as Sunny, this model began to circulate in Mexico in 1985 with an extended body that included an additional cargo area behind the rear seats.

This new model was distinguished by being larger and more spacious than the Samurai, although it retained many mechanical elements.

The Hikari had a 1.6-liter carbureted four-cylinder engine that, depending on the version, could be coupled to a four- or five-speed manual transmission, as well as a three-speed automatic. It was in production until 1991 and is remembered for its high mechanical reliability.

A novelty in this model was the equipment of elements such as electric lifts and door locks , conditions that were only found in cars of higher segments.

Starting with the 1993 model, it introduced an electronic fuel injection system and increased its power to 93 horsepower . It also excelled at providing very balanced handling thanks to its independent suspension on both axles. In 1994, the new engine allowed it to reach 105 horsepower.

Nobody imagined that in 1995, as a consequence of the " December Error ", the Tsuru suffered a process of reduction in price, which, together with its great functionality and equipment, made it in later years the favorite car of taxi drivers and families with low purchasing power .

It was not until 2005 that Tsuru underwent an aesthetic update in force until 2017, the year in which its production stops .

In Mexico, the Tsuru era left an indelible mark on urban asphalt—and the memory of Mexicans—with more than 2.4 million units sold .
