Pemex sees natural gas as the key to revenue and energy sovereignty.

Petróleos Mexicanos' new 2025-2030 Strategic Plan proposes a decisive push for domestic natural gas production. In 2024, Mexico imported 6.666 billion cubic feet, equivalent to 74% of the national supply, with the United States as the main supplier.
For energy expert Alonso Romero, this increase in production will not only reduce external dependence but also open up "new horizons" of revenue for the oil company and the country. Gas, used primarily to generate electricity and in petrochemical processes, is considered strategic for strengthening energy sovereignty.
Pemex expects to reach 3.993 billion cubic feet in 2026 and increase to 4.756 billion in 2027, maintaining that level until at least 2035. Strategic projects include Ixachi, Quesqui, Bakte, Lakach, Burgos, Veracruz, and deepwater developments such as Exploratus, Cratos, Kunah, Piklis, and Doctus.
The strategy also includes mixed contracts with private investment, capacity recovery at gas processing complexes, and reduction of gas flaring. Through these actions, the company seeks to guarantee supply, optimize its plants, and consolidate its role in national energy security.
