13.4 million Mexicans escaped poverty between 2018 and 2024: INEGI

The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) reported that 13.41 million Mexicans escaped poverty between 2018 and 2024, the period corresponding to the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
In 2024, 38.49 million people were living in poverty, down from the 51.9 million recorded in 2018. This represents 29.59% of the country's total population living in poverty.
For the first time, INEGI introduced multidimensional poverty, which considers not only income but also access to social rights such as housing, education, healthcare, and food. Between 2022 and 2024, 8.31 million people were lifted out of poverty using this methodology.
Starting in July 2024, INEGI assumed the role of reporting the official poverty measurement, following the dissolution of CONEVAL. The National Household Income and Expenditure Survey (ENIGH) serves as the main input for these estimates.
