Historic announcement: The International Court of Justice opens the door to lawsuits against states for climate damage. What could be the penalty? Over the past 28 years, Getty Images photographers and videographers, recognized as the world's leading creator of visual content, have developed specialized expertise in capturing the most important news events around the world. In 2023, its photojournalists embarked on a mission to tell stories of natural disasters from the frontlines—whether in the midst of hurricanes or amidst wildfires—putting themselves in harm's way to show the impact these events have on places and people. They also documented historic droughts, rising temperatures, intense rainfall and flooding, and much more—in both faraway places and in our own backyards throughout 2023.
Through the lens of Getty Images’ award-winning photographers, Sandy Ciric, Senior Director of Editorial Photography at Getty Images, shared with El Tiempo a gallery of images highlighting some of the events that have shaped the history of climate change in 2023. “The harsh reality of climate change has been far from subtle this year. Getty Images photojournalists produced powerful images and videos that allow the entire world to witness a year of extreme weather across the planet. In addition, they documented historic droughts, intense heat, floods, wildfires, and intense storms,” says Sandy Ciric, Senior Director of Editorial Photography at Getty Images. “Photography remains essential in reporting and conveying the effects of climate change. Documenting these increasingly ‘normal’ extremes provides us with context and chronology as our world continues to change.” width="70">
