A new surge of Arctic air will move across much of the United States this weekend, bringing a marked drop in temperatures, scattered snowfall, and wintry wind chills from the Plains to the Atlantic coast.
According to CNN meteorologist Mary Gilbert, the cold front will allow a mass of Arctic air to move from the northern part of the continent to the southern states . "It will be the first real taste of winter for millions," explained the specialist, who detailed that temperatures will drop between 10°F and 15°F (5°C and 8°C) below the usual average across almost all of the territory east of the Rocky Mountains by Sunday night.
The process will begin Saturday in northern regions , especially in the Plains and the Upper Midwest , where highs will drop sharply. In Minneapolis , Friday will see highs near 46°F (8°C), but Saturday highs will barely exceed 38°F (3°C ), with a a mixture of rain and snow during the day.
By Sunday , the cold will intensify: Chicago will reach only 40°F (4°C) , about 10°F lower than usual, while St. Louis is expected to reach a high of 45°F (7°C) .
Fox Weather meteorologists warned that the temperature contrast will be noticeable in major urban centers across the northern and northeastern United States. Cold air, pushed by a low-pressure area from Canada, will cause temperatures to drop by as much as 20°F (11°C) between Friday and Monday in cities near the Great Lakes.
Even areas farther south will feel the impact. In Atlanta, Georgia , Sunday will see a high of 70°F (21°C), but by Monday the high will drop to 50°F (10°C) and the low will hover around 32°F (0°C) by dawn on Tuesday. In Nashville, Tennessee , Monday's high will be just 45°F (7°C) , nearly 20°F below the seasonal average.
The drop in temperature will bring the first widespread snowfall of the season , according to AccuWeather . Meteorologist Paul Pastelok explained that “conditions will be more like mid-December or even Christmas in many areas.” A combination of cold air and moisture will allow for the formation of a snow belt stretching from the Midwest to the Appalachians and the Northeast.
In northern Michigan , the city of Marquette could experience several hours of snow between Saturday and Monday , while Chicago is expected to see light accumulation between Saturday night and Sunday morning .
In the area surrounding Lakes Erie and Ontario , experts anticipate the start of the so-called lake-effect snow , a phenomenon typical of the region when cold air passes through the warm waters of the lakes .
Monday, November 10, will be the coldest day for tens of millions of people since spring, with sub-zero temperatures reaching even North Texas and the Appalachian Mountains. Meteorologists estimated that the thermometer could drop to 32°F (0°C) or lower in states like Kentucky , Virginia , and North Carolina .
The frigid air will also reach the Southeast , according to the Fox Weather Forecast Center. Temperatures in Jackson, Mississippi, are expected to be around 35°F (2°C) on Monday , while Tampa, Florida, will see a significant drop: from 82°F (28°C) this week to 55°F (13°C) on Monday .
By Tuesday , the cold will be more intense in the interior of the Southeast, where lows will reach 20°F (-6°C) in areas of northern Georgia , South Carolina , and Alabama .
