The best microphones for recording podcasts

Our expert has chosen the Logitech model as the winner of this comparison due to its excellent performance when it comes to recording quality sound.

I'm passionate about podcasts : since they came into my life, I've been unable to cook, go for a walk, or do any activity without an episode playing in the background. And although I've occasionally fantasized about making my own, I didn't quite dare due to embarrassment and a lack of a clear topic. However, I decided to sign up for a podcasting course, and I had no choice but to record one. To do so, I needed a good recording device that would allow me to hear the episodes in good quality, so I tried out different microphones to see which ones gave me the best results. This way, I was able to check out the features offered by some of the best-selling microphones on Amazon, so that anyone who wants to buy one to record podcasts can choose the best one.

How we chose and tested the products:

Over the course of a month, I've been testing the microphones included in this comparison. To do so, I recorded short fragments of my podcast with each one and tested both their ease of use and sound quality. They all feature a small tripod that holds the microphone, making recording easier since you don't have to hold it. Additionally, each offers different features that allow you to customize your recording experience. When analyzing and evaluating them, I took the following aspects into account:

  • Design: They all have similar aesthetics and build quality, but some differences are noticeable.
  • Sound quality: They achieve truly clear sound, without external noise and with sufficient quality to record a podcast.
  • Add-ons: I've considered all the features that allow you to customize your sound to achieve the best performance.
  • User experience : whether the microphone meets expectations and allows for high-quality, easy recording.

Who it's for: People who have a semi-professional podcast and need a good microphone.

Why we chose it: It's a microphone that stands out in the world of podcasts and content creation thanks to its sound quality and features. It's the most expensive model in the comparison, but it's also the one that, in my opinion, offers the best user experience, especially for people looking for something more professional. It works via USB, so it doesn't require additional equipment like audio interfaces. It also has a Plug & Play function, allowing it to connect directly to your computer, whether on Windows or macOS, without the need for installation.

When recording, it includes four configurations (cardioid, omnidirectional, bidirectional, and stereo), making it ideal for a variety of situations, from solo recordings to interviews or live music. It delivers excellent sound, with great clarity and no background noise. Additionally, its integrated buttons on the center of the microphone body allow you to adjust the headphone volume, gain, polar pattern, and mute mode. Once you learn how to control it, it offers a wide range of possibilities while recording. Another thing I really like about it is that its tripod is quite sturdy, so I was confident that the microphone wouldn't fall over during recording.

Its weak points: nothing noteworthy.

Who it's for: People looking for a good microphone, especially for live streaming.

Why we chose it: It has a similar aesthetic to the Logitech model, but with a smaller footprint and a simpler tripod. It's a slightly more affordable but highly efficient option that can be used by streamers, podcasters, and content creators alike. This entry-level model stands out for its good sound with simple setup and universal compatibility, allowing it to be used with Windows, macOS, and even PlayStation computers.

Like the previously reviewed model, it offers Plug N Play functionality, as well as a handy touch sensor on the top that allows you to mute the microphone quickly and easily. I found this mode quite useful for when you want to mute the sound during a recording, in case there is suddenly a lot of external noise or something unexpected happens. It also has a cardioid polar pattern, optimized to capture front-facing sound and minimize ambient noise. Overall, I think it delivers good sound and is very easy to use, although it doesn't offer exactly the same performance as the winning model because its functions are more limited.

Its weaknesses : although its recording quality is good, the lack of a built-in shock absorber makes it easy to record vibrations or bumps on the desk.

Who it's for: Those looking for a cardioid microphone with a good mount.

Why we chose it: This microphone comes with everything you need: a shockmount, a tripod, a pop filter, and more. It's very easy to set up, and in less than five minutes I had it connected to my laptop and ready to record. Since it's plug and play, I didn't have to install drivers or go through any complicated configurations. I literally plugged it in and it worked, which is very appreciated.

The sound quality is quite good. I won't say it competes with high-end studio microphones, but for voice recordings, remote interviews, and even some live broadcasts, it works well. It captures voices cleanly and without background noise. The cardioid polar pattern does its job well, focusing the sound forward and isolating what's happening to the sides or behind you quite well. I find this especially useful if, like me, you're recording at home and noise from neighbors or the street might interfere. Another thing I liked most was the included suspension mount. Although it's basic, it reduces vibrations, especially those that tend to creep in when you touch the table. The tripod is functional, but not very tall, and that forced me to hunch over a bit or put the microphone on books to get it at the right height. Additionally, the included USB cable is a bit short if you need to move away from your computer. Another weak point is that it doesn't have a physical button to mute the microphone.

Its weak points: short cable and small tripod.

Who it's for: Anyone who wants an affordable microphone with good sound.

Why we chose it: This model features subtle, color-changing LED lighting, which obviously doesn't improve the sound but gives it a more visually appealing touch. The microphone is quite compact, easy to place on a desk, and because it's plug and play via USB, I plugged it directly into my laptop and it recognized it instantly.

I've primarily used it to record several test podcasts, and the results have been good: the cardioid pickup pattern helps focus the audio on my voice, although if there's some movement in the background or a loud sound out of frame, it sometimes creeps into the recording. My voice came through clearly, without distortion or extraneous noise. I also tried it on video calls, and there was a noticeable difference compared to the laptop's built-in microphone: others could hear me much better. One detail I found useful is the built-in mute button on the front. It's very practical, especially if you're recording for a long time or performing live and need to mute quickly. However, I do miss the inclusion of a pop filter.

Its weak points: it lacks any add-ons that improve the user experience.

Another interesting podcast microphone model:

If you're looking for a microphone with a good stand, the main feature of this Anykuu model is its microphone placement accessories: it has an adjustable stand that allows you to securely attach the microphone and adjust the angle to achieve the best recording angle according to each user's needs. The microphone has a cardioid condenser and provides a sampling rate of up to 24-bit/192 kHz, and is also plug and play.

Podcast Microphone FAQ: Which type of microphone is best for podcasting: dynamic or condenser?

It depends on the environment and your style. For example, dynamic microphones are ideal for non-acoustically treated rooms, as they are less sensitive to background noise. Condenser microphones capture more detail and subtleties, but require a quiet, well-insulated environment.

Do I need an audio interface or is it enough to connect the microphone via USB?

If you're just starting out, a USB microphone is sufficient and very practical. It connects directly to your computer. But if you want better quality and more control, opt for an XLR microphone with an audio interface, which allows for a cleaner, more professional sound and the ability to connect more than one microphone.

What is the difference between a USB and an XLR microphone?

USB is plug-and-play, easy to use, and ideal for beginners or solo recording. XLR, on the other hand, requires an interface or mixer, but offers greater quality and versatility. It's the professional standard.

What features should I look for in a podcast microphone?
  • Cardioid polar pattern (rejects sounds from the sides and rear).
  • Low self-noise and good frequency response (between 80 Hz and 15 kHz is ideal for vocals).
  • Compatibility with your operating system and interface if you use XLR.
  • Included accessories such as a stand, pop filter or shock absorber are a plus.
