Letters from the editor: A circus, disappointed, virtues

A circus
An excellent article by Joaquín Morales Solá, "Speculators and Trapeze Artists in the Dark," discusses the shameful spectacle of candidate selection for the upcoming elections. Trapeze artists, pole vaulting, and mockingly obvious candidacies... a veritable circus that frightens anyone and explains, as the journalist observes, why a large portion of society chooses to stay away from the polls. A festival of cheap politicking. Thus, these politicians are becoming isolated from the people, who can no longer accept them as representatives, but rather as mere seekers of personal space. Politicians who—to paraphrase Cirque du Soleil—are forming their own Cirque des Solitaires. Solitary, far removed from the realities of the people, locked away in their hilarious antics, revealing that they are motivated by nothing more than their greedy ambitions for power.

Upset
Eva Perón wrote in her book: "Anyone who isn't a Peronist is an oligarch, a traitor, and a sellout." Patricia Bullrich stated that anyone who doesn't support Milei is a mobster. At the La Derecha Fest in Córdoba, a video featuring the vice president was shown so that those present could criticize her. After 42 years of democracy, we're still fighting the same way. You're either on one side or the other. It's unfortunate that the government is the one that installed him. I'm retired, 84 years old, and I know something about the Peronist dictatorship. Are we going back?

Virtues
The lack of education observed in many of our representatives in the National Congress is no less than the lack of culture they reveal. The lack of training, civility, or courtesy is overwhelming. In some cases, they even boast about it. After more than 40 years of democracy, there should be no doubt about the minimum virtues that those who rise in the political career ladder should possess. However, in many cases, this is not the case. Although it is the intention of many leaders to keep the population mired in ignorance, and the history of the last 80 years attests to this, today we cannot claim a lack of information. Technological advances mean that anyone with an internet connection and a telephone can access virtually all types of knowledge. For the times to come, it is crucial that, through adequate education, citizens be able to accurately discern between those who blatantly lie to us and exploit poverty to further their personal interests and those who do not. And also know how to distinguish those politicians who display a huge gap between their actions and their speeches, just as enormous are their suggestive personal fortunes.

Placet
The draft resolution presented to the Chamber of Deputies by Esteban Paulón and Mónica Fein urging President Milei not to accept the approval of Peter Lamelas's ambassador to Argentina, presented by the U.S. government, and not to approve the credentials that are duly presented, reveals a total disregard for diplomatic protocol. Indeed, if Lamelas's approval is rejected, or rather, not accepted, since the rejection is formalized by the silence of the receiving state, his credentials cannot be presented.

Patience
We Argentines live in constant uncertainty, looking to our leaders for immediate solutions, without recognizing our responsibility for what happens to us. The poor education of populism has fostered easygoing behavior and ignorance, which affect the entire society. This new government proposes great sacrifice. We want peace, work, and honesty, but the State cannot do everything without citizen collaboration. We need profound changes, with clear laws and honest officials to enforce them. Let us collaborate patiently in this new opportunity to improve our quality of life. Beyond the forms, the ultimate goal is the most important, and we must achieve it.

Mystery and frustration
Man without the gift of faith is only mystery and frustration. Mystery because reason allows him to ask questions that find no answers in the light of that same reason, and frustration because he is repulsed by death, does not want to die, and since he cannot cure or avoid it, lives as if he will never die. That is why when it inevitably comes, it is so tragic and costly. Without the gift of faith, we would walk in darkness, and he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going.

Inspiring example
We remain perplexed by the scandal involving the CEO of Astronomer and his Human Resources director at a Coldplay concert. Companies with polished integrity policies, refined compliance platforms, and organizational cultures that affirm unquestionable values and principles are exposed by the conduct of those who lead them. Caesar's wife must not only be honest, but also appear to be so. That advice given to the Roman more than twenty-one centuries ago remains relevant. In our Almagro neighborhood, things are different. Quadri is headquartered there. It's a company that has been manufacturing terrazzo slabs since 1861, and is led by the fifth generation of its family. They don't make big announcements or boast about their values. Quietly, they hire Matías Viacava, who has Down syndrome, to classify the samples, identify them, place them in the boxes that Matías himself assembles, and then mail them to them. Brothers Nicolás and Alejandro offer Matías a caring and affectionate work environment.
You will know them by their fruits. That maxim from the master of Galilee remains true. May these stories of good, cultivated in silence, have as much significance and impact on our conversations and behavior as those. Quadri, an inspiring and challenging example.
