Hate crime against trans minor reported in Sinaloa

After finding a 17-year-old trans girl dead and showing signs of violence on a farm in the municipality of Ahome, Sinaloa , activists and LGBTI+ rights advocates are calling for the case to be investigated as a hate crime.

According to reports, La Vale, as she identified herself, disappeared on June 15 in the community of Compuertas , when she left her home to accompany a cousin a few blocks from her house, but nothing more was known about her whereabouts.

On the 28th of that same month, her body was found in an advanced state of decomposition , so she could not be identified at the scene. The Sinaloa Prosecutor's Office reported her death as a skeleton, outside of the daily homicide report.

Suspecting that it could be La Vale , her family underwent genetic testing, which came back positive on the afternoon of July 11.

They ask that the events be investigated as a hate crime.

After the official confirmation , the groups Ahome Diversos and Sinaloa+Incluyente demanded that his death be investigated as a hate crime , since, according to initial reports, he died from severe head trauma caused by blows.

We stand in solidarity with her family, her friends, and all the trans women who feel fear, anger, or exhaustion. Vale had a name, a story, and dreams. She was murdered for who she was. This is called transphobia, and we cannot allow it to continue to be normalized," the document states.

The people, activities and community members demand that the Prosecutor's Office investigate this as a hate crime based on gender identity , following protocols for action with a perspective of sexual diversity and human rights , and that the community media stop violating their memory by using language that denies or erases their gender identity.

These groups revealed that the case has been recorded as the 25th hate crime against LGBTI+ people in Sinaloa since 2013, according to the National Observatory of Hate Crimes against LGBTI+ People.
