Frenchwoman Frappart will referee the grand final
The UEFA Referees Committee has appointed Frenchwoman Stéphanie Frappart to referee the European Championship final between England and Spain , which will take place this Sunday at 6:00 p.m. at the St. Jakob-Park Stadium in Basel, Switzerland. The 41-year-old referee, an international since 2011 , has officiated in 111 UEFA matches during her distinguished career. At this latest tournament, she officiated two group matches and the quarter-final between Norway and Italy (1-2).
Stéphanie Frappart, who served as the fourth referee for the 2022 Women's Euro final, said she was delighted with the appointment: "I am very happy to have been selected to referee the Women's Euro final. It is a great honor and a proud moment at the end of a wonderful tournament."
UEFA Director of Refereeing, Roberto Rosetti , expressed confidence in the referee's work: "We are satisfied with the performance of the referees in this tournament. They have made a great step forward in terms of their physical preparation and quality of refereeing. Stéphanie Frappart deserves this appointment, as she is a role model for the younger generation of referees due to her professionalism and her attitude on and off the pitch."
Frappart was involved in a controversy during the quarterfinals between Norway and Italy. The Frenchwoman awarded a penalty to Italy when Elena Linari grabbed Ada Hegerberg as she was about to cross. Despite the Norwegian captain being offside , the Frenchwoman stood by her decision at the urging of VAR. However, Hegerberg herself missed the penalty, her second missed at this European Championship. UEFA later clarified that the decision was correct, arguing as follows: "At the time the ball was played, the Norwegian number 14 attacker was in an offside position. However, the holding offence occurred with the ball still in the air , away from the players, and the attacker was not actively involved in play at the time. Therefore, the offside position was not punishable."
The refereeing team for the Euro 2020 final between Spain and England will be as follows: Referee: Stéphanie Frappart (France) . Assistant referees: Camille Soriano (France), Francesca di Monte (Italy). Fourth referee: Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi (Italy). Reserve assistant referee: Susanne Küng (Switzerland). VAR: Willy Delajod (France) . VAR assistant referee: Christian Dingert (Germany). VAR support referee: Dennis Higler (Netherlands).
