Floods in Texas leave at least 27 dead, including 9 children

Texas is facing one of the worst natural disasters in its recent history. On Saturday, July 5, 2025, heavy rains lashed the state's center and caused the Guadalupe River to overflow its banks, leaving a preliminary death toll of 27 people , including nine minors , and more than 850 evacuated .

The hardest hit area was the Kerrville and Hunt region, where state and local emergency teams deployed more than 1,000 first responders , including helicopters, drones, high-mobility vehicles and canine squads.

Efforts are focused on the search for at least 20 girls from Camp Mystic , who went missing after being swept away by floodwaters during an emergency evacuation.

"It was a sudden, devastating wave. Many of the girls were crossing the river when the level suddenly rose," a rescuer explained to local media.

Extreme rains and collapsed infrastructure

According to the National Weather Service, between 12 and 15 inches (30-38 centimeters) of rain fell between Friday night and early Saturday morning, causing the Guadalupe River to flash flood levels as high as 30 feet ( 9 meters) .

This phenomenon, known as a "flash flood," swept away mobile homes and vehicles and toppled dozens of trees. Media outlets such as Reuters , ABC News , Fox Weather , and AP News agree that conditions in the area are extremely dangerous, and that the region known as "Flood Alley" in Texas remains vulnerable.

Local infrastructure collapsed at multiple points. Several roads were destroyed or closed, while local hospitals activated emergency protocols following the arrival of dozens of injured people.
