Calpe City Council officially uses the Catalan flag: "They want to culturally annex the Valencian people to the Catalan one."

Lo Rat Penat has denounced the use of the Catalan flag by the Calpe City Council (Alicante) on its municipal website—it can be seen alongside the official coat of arms—and has demanded that the municipal government—made up of Som Calp, Compromís, and the Socialists of the PSPV-PSOE—replace it with the Senyera Valenciana.

Specifically, he revealed with a screenshot how the Valencian language is identified with the Quatribarrada , in a post shared on Instagram, as well as on the main citizen services page. " It falsifies the historical, cultural, and identity reality of the Valencian people and also represents a direct violation of the Statute of Autonomy of the Valencian Community."

And they recall Article 4 of the aforementioned legislative body, which establishes that "the traditional Senyera of the Valencian Community is composed of four red bars on a yellow background, crowned by a blue stripe next to the flagpole."

For this century-old cultural entity, this use of the symbol as an official symbol "is a sign of the desire to culturally annex the Valencian people to the Catalan people, erasing their own identity."

Aside from this practice, which anyone can verify and corroborate on the Internet, Lo Rat Penat adds another circumstance to his complaint that is already open to debate: "Furthermore, the language version offered on the City Council's website is significantly different from the Valencian spoken by the people, adopting an artificial standard that is alien to normal, vernacular Valencian."

This association, in fact, attracts both support and opposition due to its commitment to defending the vocabulary used by Valencian speakers, rather than that advocated by nationalist sectors, using vocabulary common in Catalonia, established within the framework of linguistic normalization on both sides of the Ebro.

"We remind the municipal government that the Real Senyera is one of the oldest flags in Europe and has unique historical characteristics; both because of its ancient tradition and its representativeness for the Valencian people, it deserves to be treated with respect and dignity," Lo Rat Penat added.
