Highway construction sites in Germany: Map shows all current construction sites

Many major projects are planned for German highways this year. Numerous bridges, tunnels, and roadways need to be modernized or replaced.
According to the Autobahn GmbH, around 1,000 projects are currently being processed simultaneously across Germany, with the same project counting twice if both directions are affected. The following map shows the current situation in Germany.
The permanent construction sites alone total approximately 2,300 kilometers—equivalent to almost ten percent of Germany's entire motorway network. In addition, unannounced daytime construction sites can cause short-term disruptions.
Construction sites are a major reason why motorways are so often congested. The most frequent and longest traffic jams occur at construction sites where lanes are lost, speeds must be significantly reduced, or the traffic is particularly long.
Construction sites are not only a frequent cause of delays. They are also frequently the cause of critical traffic situations and accidents. Lanes are often narrowed to 2.5 meters—a challenge, especially for larger vehicles. Especially at night, the route along the lighting can become confusing.
