Julia M. emigrated from Great Britain to Lamagdelaine, a small commune of 716 residents in southwest France, a few years ago. When she moved there, she felt extremely safe. But now, crime is on the rise. "People are afraid," M. told the Sunday Times.
“The trouble started a few months ago when the village pub was robbed at knifepoint.” Since then, there has been a spate of break-ins.
Many people now sleep with guns under their pillows. According to the Sunday Times, one of the crimes that has increased in recent years is "homejacking." This is the term used to describe violent, armed robberies committed while the victims are in their homes.
In response to the growing fear, the mayor has called a public meeting between villagers and the police. "We can no longer claim that we are safe here or in other rural departments," an official confirmed, according to the Sunday Times. Going forward, the village will implement a neighborhood watch program overseen and administered by law enforcement.
