(sda/apa) Double Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel abandoned the Tour de France during the 14th stage. The Belgian, currently in third place overall, got off his bike on Saturday, exhausted, about 100 kilometers from the finish of the difficult Pyrenees stage from Pau to Superbagnères.

In 2024, the road world champion and 2022 Vuelta winner finished third overall in the Tour behind Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard. Last December, serious injuries sustained in a training crash set him back for months during his preseason.
At this year's Tour, Evenepoel won the individual time trial on the fifth day, but began to falter in the Pyrenees. On Friday, in the mountain time trial, he lost a lot of time to the leading duo of Pogacar and Vingegaard.
