A major shock for the Italian ski team: Matteo Franzoso suffered a serious fall during his training camp in Chile and suffered a traumatic brain injury. The 25-year-old received emergency treatment right on the slopes and was then taken by helicopter to a hospital in Santiago de Chile. There, doctors placed him in an artificial coma to allow for further examinations and treatment.
His current health status is still unclear. "The FISI Medical Commission is in constant contact with the Chilean doctors who are monitoring the situation. Updates on the young Italian athlete's condition will follow," the Italian Ski Federation announced.
Franzoso is considered an up-and-coming athlete in the Italian ski circuit, but major successes have eluded him so far. He has competed in 17 World Cup events in downhill and super-G during his career. He finished among the top 30 in the super-G in Crans Montana in February.
