Luis Suarez 's spitting attack following Inter Miami's 3-0 Leagues Cup final loss to the Seattle Sounders has now resulted in another punishment for the Uruguayan. After already serving a six-match Leagues Cup ban, the 38-year-old also receives a three-match ban from MLS matches, the league announced.
When the League Cup ban was announced, the league reserved the right to impose a penalty for the league as well, which is what it did. Now Lionel Messi 's teammate will have to sit out a total of nine matches.
Missing against the Sounders, among othersThe trigger for the severe punishments for Suarez, who has already been subjected to disciplinary action several times, was a brawl sparked by the striker, in which he spat at a Seattle Sounders official. Suarez subsequently apologized on Instagram for this latest outburst, calling it a "moment of tension and frustration," but saying it "doesn't justify" his reaction.
The 2015 Champions League winner will miss the MLS matches against FC Charlotte (September 13), the Sounders (September 16), and DC United (September 20). The MLS also imposed another penalty on the Sounders for the on-field violence. Staff member Steven Lenhart's accreditation was revoked for the current season. Lenhart will therefore be restricted to the stands for the remainder of the season.
