Following Jamal Musiala's serious injury in the Club World Cup quarterfinal against Paris Saint-Germain, PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma is under heavy criticism. The Italian hit the Bayern star with unfortunate force as he came out. Musiala suffered a broken fibula and several ligament injuries, forcing him to be sidelined for months.
Donnarumma's behavior immediately after the collision caused particular displeasure. Although he was visibly distressed on the pitch, dropped to his knees, and had to be comforted by teammates, he initially didn't approach Musiala. Only after Bayern captain Manuel Neuer addressed him directly on the pitch did the PSG goalkeeper approach the German international lying on the ground.
"Then I went up to him and said, 'Don't you want to go over there?'" Neuer later explained . "Jamal is lying there, and will most likely stay in the hospital – I think it's appropriate to wish him all the best and say sorry." The world champion also sharply criticized the way the incident unfolded: "That was a situation you shouldn't get caught up in. You simply accept the injury to your opponent."
Sporting director Max Eberl also had clear words after the game. While he emphasized that Donnarumma didn't act intentionally, he nevertheless sharply criticized the force of the tackle. "When I dive into an opponent weighing almost 100 kilos, there's a high risk that something will happen," said Eberl. "He showed no consideration. It wasn't brutal intent, but it wasn't prudent behavior either."
Donnarumma has since spoken out publicly himself. The 26-year-old addressed Musiala on Instagram: "All my prayers and best wishes are with you, Jamal Musiala." He also posted a photo showing him with his head bowed, supported by two staff members as he left the pitch.
