Filippo Baroncini crashed at the Tour of Poland and suffered multiple fractures. Several accidents had already overshadowed the race in the past.
Italian professional cyclist Filippo Baroncini has been placed in an artificial coma following his serious crash on the third stage of the Tour of Poland . The teammate of Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar suffered multiple facial and collarbone fractures in the crash on Wednesday. He will now be flown to Italy for surgery, according to the Cyclingnews portal. Baroncini, who was initially conscious, was placed in an artificial coma for this purpose.
On the third stage, a small group crashed a good 22 kilometers from the finish. As a result, the jury suspended the race for 15 minutes. In addition to Baroncini, Polish veteran Rafal Majka and Italian Antonio Tiberi were among those affected by the crash.
Several serious crashes have already overshadowed the Tour in the past. In 2019, Belgian talent Bjorg Lambrecht died after crashing into a concrete structure. A year later, a catastrophic crash in the sprint to the finish of the first stage caused shock, when Dutch professional cyclist Dylan Groenewegen forced his compatriot Fabio Jakobsen into a barrier at high speed. Jakobsen was temporarily in an artificial coma, lost almost all of his teeth, and required multiple surgeries. Groenewegen was suspended for nine months.
