Taiwo Awoniyi will have to undergo surgery after hitting the post in the match against Leicester City. This could mean the end of the season for the Nottingham Forest striker.

Former Bundesliga player Taiwo Awoniyi's English season is likely over. The 27-year-old Nottingham Forest striker had to undergo emergency surgery for an abdominal injury, the English Premier League club announced. Following the surgery, the former Union Berlin player was placed in an artificial coma, according to the British tabloid "The Sun."

Further information will follow in due course, it was stated. Awoniyi hit the post in the closing stages of Sunday's 2-2 home match against Leicester City while trying to get to the ball.

According to English media reports, Awoniyi, who previously played for FSV Mainz 05 and 1. FC Union Berlin in the Bundesliga, was not in danger of dying. Forest wished the player a speedy recovery, including via social media.

Union Berlin also sent its record-breaking player, who was sold to Nottingham for around €20 million in 2022, "best wishes for a speedy recovery." The Köpenickers had signed the Nigerian international from Liverpool in 2021.

Awoniyi's injury led to a dispute between club owner Evangelos Marinakis and Forest coach Nuno Espirito Santo immediately after the game. Marinakis stormed onto the pitch and vigorously confronted the coach.

"All of us - coaching staff, players, fans and myself - were frustrated by Taiwo's injury and the medical staff's misjudgment as to whether Taiwo could continue the game," Marinakis (57) explained his behavior on Instagram.
