Beauty editor reveals: I won't make these three beauty mistakes again

by Sofia Giannakopoulos
2 minsI'm a beauty editor, and of course, I've been interested in everything beauty and fashion since I was a child. Whether it was stealing mascara from my mother's drawer, spending hours browsing in drugstores, or designing my own Barbie dresses – one thing has always been clear: beauty and fashion are simply a part of my life. Nevertheless, like so many others, I've made a few faux pas that I wouldn't make today.
Beauty and makeup are incredibly diverse and ultimately a matter of taste. Looking back, you can see many looks as simply part of their era: A certain style or hairstyle was trending back then – and that was completely normal. Just take a look at the early 2000s compared to today: Sure, some of it is back, but some things are welcome to stay where we left them.
Over the years, I've definitely made a few beauty mistakes that I can now live without. Since I'm not hiding anything, these are my three beauty fails that I'll never repeat.
1. Cleaning makeup brushes too infrequentlyOver time, people naturally acquired numerous makeup techniques, and more and more brushes were added to their collection. This is no surprise in an age of eye-catching eye makeup, liquid lipsticks, and contouring palettes. It all sounds fun until they become careless with their brushes and the first blemishes appear. To remove bacteria, makeup residue, dead skin cells, and dust, brushes should ideally be thoroughly cleaned once a week. Fortunately, there are now many practical tools for this, such as special brush soaps, cleansers, or even silicone mats and cleaning sponges.
2. Make up eyebrows according to trends, not according to face shapeEyebrows are a topic in themselves. Especially when you consider that a few years ago, everyone seemed to be sporting the same shape: dark, angular, and neatly shaded. Judging by the photos, I unfortunately realized a little too late that this Cara Delevingne look doesn't really suit me. Perhaps in a few years we'll feel the same way about naturally styled brows or upward-combed soap brows. This makes it all the more important to find the shape that really suits your face shape and not just the current trend. Personally, I prefer to apply makeup to my eyebrows with a color-coordinated powder and fill in any small gaps with a sharpened pencil in my natural hair color. Finally, I apply a transparent gel to set it – and my perfectly tailored brows are complete.
3. Going to sleep with your hair in a bun that’s too tightWhat works wonderfully today with the numerous variations of heatless curls looked completely different just a few years ago. I can hardly count the number of times I went to bed with braids – sometimes one large one, sometimes many small ones. The results, however, were often rather disappointing. And then there was the true boss of my hair structure: buns tied too tightly overnight! The consequences? Hair breakage, split ends, and unwanted curls. Thankfully, there are much gentler methods available today. A bun isn't completely taboo – it just has to be tied loosely and gently. Alternatively, heatless curlers or silk caps are excellent for styling hair as gently as possible overnight.
