Lifeguards reprimand inattentive parents for more swimming accidents

Wesseling – In light of the increasing number of swimming accidents, the president of the Federal Association of German Swimming Masters (BDS), Peter Harzheim, criticizes inattentive parents. "Many only pay attention to their stupid smartphones, but not to their children. These things are a plague in swimming pools," Harzheim told the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung" (Sunday edition). Parents increasingly view swimming masters as "kindergarten teachers," the association president criticized. "But we are not that. We want to make the swimmers' stay as pleasant as possible and are responsible for their safety. But we are not service providers who have to run after children." The number of swimming accidents has increased in recent years. According to the German Lifesaving Association, 411 people died in 2024 – 112 more than in 2021.
