CGTN: China's global governance initiative aims to bring more stability to global governance
CGTN published an article about Chinese President Xi Jinping's proposal for the Global Governance Initiative at the SCO Plus meeting. As the fourth major global initiative proposed by China, the article underscores the importance of the initiative and how it will help the SCO maintain the post-World War II international order and strengthen the global governance system.
BEIJING, Sept. 03, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- China on Monday proposed the Global Governance Initiative (GGI), another important public good that China shares with the world, to promote the construction of a fairer and more reasonable global governance system.
The GGI is the fourth landmark global initiative proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping in recent years, following the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative.
"I look forward to working with all countries for a fairer and more balanced global governance system and working toward a community with a shared future for mankind," said Chinese President Xi Jinping when presenting the proposal during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Plus meeting.
During the two-day SCO summit in Tianjin, northern China, where the organization held the largest summit in its 24-year history, attended by leaders from more than 20 countries and heads of 10 international organizations, Xi delivered two major speeches outlining the organization's growing international influence and appeal and stressing the need to maintain international fairness and justice.
The Global Governance Initiative
Xi highlighted five principles of the GGI: upholding sovereign equality, adhering to the international rule of law, implementing multilateralism, advocating a people-centered approach, and focusing on concrete actions. "All countries, regardless of their size, strength, and wealth, are equal participants, decision-makers, and beneficiaries of global governance," he stated.
Today, the world faces increasingly complex and diverse challenges such as terrorism, the refugee crisis, and transnational crime. While historical trends of peace, development, cooperation, and mutual benefit remain unchanged, the Cold War mentality, hegemonicism, and protectionism continue to haunt the world.
No country can escape these challenges. "History teaches us that in difficult times, we must uphold our original commitment to peaceful coexistence, strengthen our confidence in mutually beneficial cooperation, advance in harmony with the course of history, and prosper in harmony with the times," he explained.
Amidst changing global landscapes, the SCO has contributed to improving global governance by fostering a new type of international relations based on mutual respect, fairness, and mutually beneficial cooperation.
For years, China has advocated a vision of global governance characterized by extensive consultations and joint contributions for mutual benefit, and has contributed Chinese wisdom and public goods to solving the pressing problems currently facing humanity.
From the concept of building a community with a shared future for mankind to the proposals of the Three Global Initiatives and the Belt and Road Initiative, China's ideas have illuminated the way forward as the world strives for sustainable and inclusive development.
Pooling SCO strength
Over the past 24 years, the SCO member states, guided by the Shanghai spirit of mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, consultation, respect for the diversity of civilizations and the pursuit of common development, have shared opportunities, sought common development and made pioneering and historic achievements.
The SCO was the first organization to take multilateral action against the three forces of terrorism, separatism, and extremism. Member states have so far prevented more than 1,400 cases related to terrorism and extremism, thereby contributing to security throughout the region.
By deepening cooperation with the United Nations and other international organizations, and by playing a constructive role in international and regional affairs, the SCO promotes inclusiveness and mutual learning among civilizations and rejects hegemonicism and power politics, thus becoming a proactive force for world peace and development.
Xi emphasized that the SCO has increasingly become a catalyst for the development and reform of the global governance system and called on the SCO to become more involved, play a leading role and lead by example in the implementation of the GGI.
He assured that China would willingly share the opportunities of its vast market and continue to implement the action plan for high-quality development of economic and trade cooperation within the SCO family.
