A shortage of lawyers threatens in Saxony-Anhalt

Saxony-Anhalt/Law/Consumer (ots) - Halle. A lawyer shortage is emerging in Saxony-Anhalt. The number of lawyers is declining significantly. In 2016, there were 1,757 practicing lawyers across the state; currently, there are around 1,400. "The shortage is particularly evident in rural regions," said Christian Lisec, Managing Director of the Saxony-Anhalt Bar Association, to the Halle-based Mitteldeutsche Zeitung (Saturday edition). This trend will continue. Lisec estimates that around 500 colleagues will leave the bar in the next ten years. And there is a lack of young talent: fewer and fewer law graduates want to become traditional lawyers. In 2024, there were only around 20 new admissions. "Work-life balance is the important issue today. The willingness to take risks to set up a law firm is no longer as great," says Lisec. Across Germany, however, the number of lawyers rose to 166,504 (2024: 165,776). "There is a difference between East and West," explains Uta Hesse, chairwoman of the State Bar Association. "After reunification, there were too few lawyers in East Germany. Many young colleagues came from the old federal states – today they retire almost at the same time." Positions in the civil service seem more attractive to many aspiring lawyers, says Lisec. "There's the mentality: regular working hours, regular income."
