On the day the Pope died , the dog ate rat poison. A courageous young doctor gave him an IV at a veterinary clinic around midnight and saved his life. After this stirring experience, filled with gratitude and another feeling that bore a resemblance to what I imagine humility to be, we joined the crowd of papal pilgrims outside our front door the next morning.
