New Zealand singer and songwriter Lorde rose to prominence in 2012 with her EP "The Love Club"—particularly the song "Royals," which became a worldwide hit. The track topped the US singles charts for nine weeks—a previously unprecedented achievement for a New Zealand artist.
Musically, Lorde combines elements of art pop, dream pop, indie pop, electropop, and hip-hop and R&B influences. Her lyrics are considered insightful and poetic, often reflecting personal experiences as well as social and emotional issues.
Lorde won two awards at the 2014 Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year for "Royals." Her debut album, "Pure Heroine," catapulted her to international acclaim and shaped the pop sound of the early 2010s. With her follow-up, "Melodrama" (2017), Lorde underscored her reputation as an innovative artist exploring themes such as emotional complexity and self-discovery.
Her third album, "Solar Power" (2021), marks a stylistic evolution toward a more cheerful and acoustic sound. Her fourth studio album, "Virgin," which Lorde produced with Jim-E Stack, will be released on June 27, 2025. The first single, "What Was That," was released in April and musically ties in with her melodrama era. "Virgin" is billed as a personal, transparent, and experimental work that, according to Lorde, reflects her feminine facets and artistic openness.
In addition to her music, Lorde is also known for her commitment to social and environmental issues. She advocates for climate protection and the rights of indigenous communities, for example.
Lorde, whose real name is Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor, was born on November 7, 1996, in Takapuna, a suburb of Auckland. According to unconfirmed reports, the singer has recently been living in London.
