The long-time director of the Berliner Ensemble , Claus Peymann, who passed away two weeks ago , was a man of contradictions: at the same time a morally sound pacifist and yet full of petty aggression, a left-wing materialist and convinced king, a fighter and avenger of the poor and weak and yet power-hungry and greedy (although dealing with money was not one of his strengths).
