Russia and Belarus launch major maneuvers near EU border

In close proximity to the EU and NATO, Russia and its ally Belarus will begin their large-scale strategic exercise Zapad 2025 (West 2025) on Friday. The exercise, which runs until September 16, will take place in both countries. The major military exercise Zapad takes place every four years. Russia used the previous exercise, Zapad 2021, to deploy weapons and heavy equipment for its attack on Ukraine in February 2022.

In the tense situation caused by the ongoing war, neighboring Poland is concerned and has closed its border with Belarus for the duration of the maneuvers. The airspace near Poland and Latvia is also closed. The conflict between Russia and NATO has further escalated due to the incursion of Russian drones into Poland on Wednesday.

However, the Belarusian military announced in May that some planned exercises would be canceled and others relocated deeper into the country. Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin confirmed, however, that training was underway for the use of nuclear weapons and the new nuclear-capable Oreshnik medium-range missile from Russia.

Moscow and Minsk, for their part, have expressed concern about a major military exercise in Poland in early September involving some 30,000 soldiers.
