Israel's former military lawyer arrested in connection with torture video

Israel's former top military prosecutor, Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, has been arrested by police in connection with the leaked torture video from the notorious Sde Teiman military camp, according to media reports. The video allegedly shows the mistreatment of a Palestinian prisoner. Israeli media reported that Tomer-Yerushalmi is accused of obstructing the investigation. She submitted her resignation on Friday in response to the leak.
In her resignation letter, she reportedly took responsibility for forwarding the video. According to the report, she agreed to the clip's release because she wanted to "counter the false propaganda against the military justice authority." Israeli media further reported on Monday night that the military's former chief prosecutor was also taken into police custody. He, too, is suspected of obstruction of justice.
Allegation of severe abuse
Police have launched an investigation to determine whether employees of the military prosecutor's office were involved in the release of the video. The surveillance camera footage allegedly shows soldiers severely mistreating a Hamas terrorist. However, this is not clearly visible because the soldiers are forming a kind of wall with riot shields. According to media reports, the man required hospital treatment.
Five reservists have been charged as a result. Lawyers vehemently denied allegations that the prisoner had also been sexually abused. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sees the release of the video as "possibly the worst attack" on Israel's image since its founding. He announced an independent investigation.
