Complicated EU AI law: Federal Network Agency offers AI consulting service for companies

The Federal Network Agency is launching a consulting service for companies that must comply with the requirements of the European AI Regulation when using artificial intelligence. Agency head Klaus Müller announced this in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

The "AI Service Desk" is intended primarily to support small and medium-sized enterprises and start-ups in the practical implementation of the rules of the European AI Act, which have been in force since August 2024, and to counteract the existing uncertainty in the market.

Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger (CDU) will present the service with Müller on Thursday at the 2nd AI Conference of the FAZ Digital Economy in Frankfurt am Main. "Companies need clear and reliable frameworks to develop and successfully implement innovative AI solutions," Wildberger told the FAZ. The service is a signal for "business- and innovation-friendly" national AI oversight with "lean, fast structures."

Federal Network Agency President Klaus Müller said the new EU rules would not only bring clarity, but also uncertainty. Companies are asking themselves, among other things, whether the AI Regulation is even relevant for them, or whether they should offer costly AI training. "This is precisely where our offering comes in," explains Müller. "We offer guidance and trust. Trust that there is a body that not only collects information but also categorizes it."

The EU's AI Act prohibits, among other things, the use of AI programs that perform assessments based on social behavior. Companies that develop or use AI must assess their systems based on the degree of risk and take appropriate measures to meet legal requirements.

Technology start-ups in particular have criticized the AI Act as a bureaucratic and anti-innovation regulation.
